Hi. You had asked what you can do to convince your sister to not spank. It is hard to tell a spanker to stop. First, you could show her the post I had made, plus several others on my other blog at http://theparentingblog.learnandgrowtogether.com. Remind her that violence breeds violence. You mentioned that you were both spanked as children, and this is a good example. Children live what they learn. Remember to not be condescending in any way, and non-insulting to her way of parenting. Just a gentle reminder of how she may have felt as a child, being spanked herself.

She can also try time ins. This is where, when her children are acting up, she sits with them, holds them, talk with them, reads, etc... A lot pf the times when children act up, especially when they do not know how to explain their feelings, they just want some extra love and attention. Even a very verbal child may not be able to tell what they are feeling.

Your best approach, to her, is to be positive, non judgmental, and supportive. Perhaps after stepping back for a min to reflect, she may try to change her attitude towards spanking. With you there to support her in this, I am sure everything will work out!!

Good luck!
